LPS, KFOR/KFRX Radio, Lincoln Education Association and the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools are teaming up to honor five outstanding educators in celebration of Nebraska Teacher Recognition Day on Tuesday, March 7, 2023.
Anyone who lives in Lincoln/Lancaster County can write an essay nominating a teacher in any of five categories: preschool–grade 2, grades 3–5, middle school, high school and retired. In addition to a written description explaining why the teacher made a difference in your life, entries should include the teacher’s name, grade level and school (or contact information), as well as the nominator’s name, school and grade level (if applicable), address and phone number.

Lincoln Standing Bear High School held a virtual presentation for students entering grades 9-12 next fall interested in attending Standing Bear High School. You can view the full presentation here.
Standing Bear High School is now accepting High School Choice Forms for any students currently in grades 8-11 who are interested in attending Lincoln’s newest high school next fall. Lincoln Public Schools allows every high school student the opportunity to choose which high school they want to attend as they enter their freshman year. Because Standing Bear High School opens next fall, every student entering grades 9-12 in the Fall of 2023 will have an opportunity to attend the new high school.
The high school will also be home to Nebraska Business Focus Program for students in grades 11 and 12.
If your high school student will be attending Standing Bear High School next school year, you need to fill out the High School Choice Form.
Incoming 9th grade students have the opportunity to choose which high school they wish to attend, but must submit the choice form by January 31, 2023. Forms received after the deadline may be denied.
Each student is assigned to a high school based on their address on file as of November 30, 2022. You can see which high school your child is assigned to attend on our website here.
If you want your child to attend a high school other than the home high school assigned to your address, you will need to submit the High School Choice Form by the January 31 deadline.
In November, the Lincoln Board of Education voted to revise the student calendar to provide staff with two more plan days this school year. There will be no classes for students on Feb. 21, 2023. You can find the updated student calendar on our website here: https://home.lps.org/calendars.

We continue to encourage LPS elementary and middle school students and families to support our high school student-participants in basketball, wrestling, bowling, swimming and diving, cheer, dance and band. As we work to keep our student-participants, coaches and spectators safe at our contests, we are advising the following:
Digital Citizenship is something we teach at Lincoln Public Schools. Families, we encourage you to also have a conversation with your child about responsible digital citizenship to help reinforce these lessons.
We would also like to remind you that most social media user agreements (Like Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) do not allow anyone under the age of 13 to use social media. This means elementary and most middle school students should NOT have access or be using social media according to these apps and their terms of service.

Digital Citizenship: Cyberbullying, Sexting, and Internet Safety

Karen Haase is an attorney at KSB School Law. Prior to attending law school, Karen taught at both the high school and post-secondary level. She is an expert in relating Nebraska law and social media/online issues. Ms. Haase will discuss cyberbullying, sexting, and internet safety. This presentation is open to students, parents/guardians, educators, and other youth-serving advocates. Karen uses humor, statistics, summaries of real-life cases, and discusses the real-life consequences attached to the inappropriate use of social media. She also presents frightening results that students who ignore internet safety have faced.

The K-12 Special Education Networking Meeting has been rescheduled from Feb. 9 to Feb. 16. The meeting will be held at the Nuernberger Education Center, 1801 S 40th St, Lincoln, NE 68506 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. We will start with parent conversations from 6:30-7:00, then at 7:00 begin the regular meeting.
