Lincoln Public Schools Families,
We will continue sending you a monthly update on the last Friday of every month with important information and reminders.
Is there an outstanding educator who has made a difference in your life? We want to hear all about it!
LPS, KFOR/KFRX Radio, Lincoln Education Association and the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools are teaming up to honor five outstanding educators in celebration of Nebraska Teacher Recognition Day on Tuesday, March 7, 2023.
Anyone who lives in Lincoln/Lancaster County can write an essay nominating a teacher in any of five categories: preschool–grade 2, grades 3–5, middle school, high school and retired. In addition to a written description explaining why the teacher made a difference in your life, entries should include the teacher’s name, grade level and school (or contact information), as well as the nominator’s name, school and grade level (if applicable), address and phone number.
Submit your nomination via this form on our website or in writing to:
Thank You Teacher

Please note: Nominations must be received by 5 pm, Tuesday, January 31, to be considered.
Standing Bear High School is now accepting High School Choice Forms for any students currently in grades 8-11 who are interested in attending Lincoln’s newest high school next fall. Lincoln Public Schools allows every high school student the opportunity to choose which high school they want to attend as they enter their freshman year. Because Standing Bear High School opens next fall, every student entering grades 9-12 in the Fall of 2023 will have an opportunity to attend the new high school.
The high school will also be home to Nebraska Business Focus Program for students in grades 11 and 12.
If a student wants to attend Standing Bear High School, they will need to fill out the High School Choice Form as soon as possible. Students who submit the form after January 31, 2023, may be denied a transfer. Turning in the form early allows administrators to start planning for classes and staffing.
Students and families are invited to learn about Lincoln’s newest high school and focus program during the informational night on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 6:30 p.m., at Moore Middle School. Staff will be on hand to answer any questions families may have about classes, activities and the focus program.
There will be a Standing Bear Booster Club informational meeting for any family who may have a student attending Standing Bear High School. This meeting will lay the groundwork for organizing the Booster Club and getting the support organization started. The meeting will be held at Moore Middle School on Monday, January 9, at 6 p.m.
If a student in grades 10–12 is interested in participating in athletics and activities, they will also need to notify the Standing Bear Athletic Director by May 1, 2023 of their intent to transfer. Failure to contact the Standing Bear AD by the deadline may jeopardize a student’s eligibility to participate in varsity activities during the 2022-23 school year.
Varsity offerings in athletics and activities will be determined after staff have gathered information on student interest and enrollment. It is important that high school students indicate their interest in Standing Bear High School prior to the January 31 deadline to help make this determination sooner.
Standing Bear High School in collaboration with Lincoln Public Schools has made the decision to open the 2023-2024 athletic season without a varsity football team. There will still be a full schedule for junior varsity, reserve and freshmen teams in football. The early announcement comes so families can make their decision about switching schools prior to the January 31 decision deadline.
More information about all of the LPS high school information nights, along with the High School Choice Form can be found on the website: https://home.lps.org/prepare.
Our focus programs offer high school students an ever-increasing array of options to follow their passions and develop skills that will serve them well beyond high school. Look through our programs and find one that matches your child’s interests!
Fill out this form and let us know what focus program you are interested in learning more about.

We are currently seeing an increased number of flu cases in our community. Here are some important reminders to help you and your family guard against illness during the flu season.
Flu symptoms include:
Most flu symptoms gradually improve over three to five days, but it’s not uncommon to feel run down for a week or more. It is strongly recommended that anyone with a fever over 100 degrees stay home until they are fever-free for at least a minimum of 24 hours without the aid of fever-reducing medication. Staying home is the best way to prevent the spread of the flu. We recommend that students and staff seek the advice of their medical provider in regards to use of antiviral medication and when to safely return to school.
It is not too late to get a flu shot, as this remains the way to prevent getting the flu virus. Please contact your healthcare provider.
In November, the Lincoln Board of Education voted to revise the student calendar to provide staff with two more plan days this school year. There will be no classes for students on Feb. 21, 2023. You can find the updated student calendar on our website here: https://home.lps.org/calendars.
What does this mean for your student:
Thank you for allowing our staff the ability to recoup valuable plan time that is missed while they are covering classes. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
We continue to encourage LPS elementary and middle school students and families to support our high school student-participants in basketball, wrestling, bowling, swimming and diving, cheer, dance and band. As we work to keep our student-participants, coaches and spectators safe at our contests, we are advising the following:
Just a reminder you can purchase game passes and ticket books online or in-person at any of the seven high schools or the Steve Joel District Leadership Center (district office at 5905 O Street). Passes and ticket books purchased online must be picked up at the school with receipt prior to attending any LPS event. Individual event tickets may be purchased online at GoFan and presented on your mobile device at the event. Service fees will apply. Individual event tickets will also be available at the gate on a cash-only basis.
All LPS households should have a login to ParentVUE in order to access important school information about their child. This includes current attendance, grading and reports cards each quarter. Please contact your student’s school office for information on setting up your account or for questions on how to use this important portal. Check out our website for more information.
Families can easily report a child’s full day absence without having to call the school by using ParentVUE. Note: Partial day absences still require a call to the office to specify what time the student will be gone.
Just follow these easy steps on your computer or through the app on your phone:
